PHILCAMSAT instructor Capt. Quentin Cox recently presented his paper, "Simulators and the Human Element," at the 29th International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) Conference held on September 26, 2024, at the Green Park Hotel and Convention Center in Istanbul. His presentation focused on the importance of not separating the human element from advancements in maritime technology, especially as the use of simulators in training and assessment becomes more prevalent due to innovations and remote operations, a shift accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Capt. Cox’s paper explored key human factors such as communication, teamwork, and leadership, which remain crucial in shipboard operations despite increasing automation and digitalization. He raised important points about how these human elements could be compromised when relying on remote simulators for training. By compiling data from secondary research and his own extensive experience in simulator-based training, Capt. Cox provided valuable insights into how the industry can prepare for further digital advancements while ensuring the human aspect remains integral to maritime operations.
