Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) participated in The Nautical Institute's (NI) Annual General Meeting and Technical Seminar themed "Leaders of the Future," held at Citadines Bay in Manila on June 27, 2024. The event was attended by key PTC executives, including Mr. Gerardo Borromeo, CEO of PTC, Beng Cristobal, COO, and Capt. Pol Haboc, Head of PHILCAMSAT and The MAST. 
Setting the tone for the two-day annual general meeting, VADM Eduardo Ma R Santos AFP (Ret), President of the Nautical Institute-Philippines, warmly welcomed the guests to Manila. Capt. André LeGoubin FNI, outgoing President of NI, also delivered a message underscoring the importance of the Philippines to NI, reocgnizing the country's role as the top provider of seafarers to the world.
Mr. Dan Aldrich Tolentino, MNI, Training Manager of IMEC, followed with a presentation highlighting the latest trends and challenges in the maritime workforce. He emphasized the importance of tailoring maritime education and training to meet the specific needs and demographics of both current and aspiring seafarers, ensuring a responsive and future-ready training approach.
In his keynote address, Mr. Borromeo shared his insights on the future of seafaring and the actions necessary to ensure that seafarers are not left behind in the advent of the 5th Industrial Revolution. He emphasized the importance of reskilling and upskilling global maritime professionals to adapt to safer, smarter, and greener shipping. He also urged stakeholders to “renovate, evolve, and transcend” their mindsets to successfully navigate the transition to decarbonized shipping. Capt. LeGoubin moderated a compelling cadet panel discussion during the second session, featuring representatives from key maritime education institutions, including PTC Malayan College Laguna, Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS), Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA), and Panpacific University (PU). Among the panelists were Cadet Jensiel Stolt Clavines and Cadette Michelle Belling from PTC Malayan College, who shared their insights on new career aspirations among their generation. The third session, chaired by NI Senior Vice President Captain Trevor Bailey, focused on the new training requirements, exploring innovation and regulatory advancements with insights from experts at Wartsila, Ocean Technologies Group, Navozyme, and MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy. The fourth session, chaired by NI Chief Executive Captain John Lloyd, emphasized learning from past incidents through thorough investigations and reviews, discussing lessons from maritime casualties and behavioral dynamics to foster positive industry-wide changes. Capt. LeGoubin concluded the event by expressing gratitude to educators, mentors, and attendees for their dedication to shaping the next generation of maritime professionals and thanked the speakers for their invaluable contributions to the seminar.
