GlobalMET conducts a successful workshop on Comprehensive STCW Review and Revision

A Comprehensive STCW Review Workshop was recently hosted by GlobalMET, in collaboration with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc. (PTCI), Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training (PHILCAMSAT), Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP), Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (PAMI), and the Philippine Association of Maritime Training Center, Inc. (PAMTCI), at the Manila Yacht Club on January 25, 2024. 
PTC’s Head of Education and Training, and the QA and Program Director of PHILCAMSAT, C/E Alfredo G. Haboc served as the workshop’s host and warmly welcomed all the distinguished guests and participants of the event. GlobalMET’s Chairman, Capt. Pradeep Chawla, gave the introduction and welcoming remarks, followed by an overview of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention and Code by MARINA METTS’ Ms. Presca Lee Lugo.
The workshop was divided into two sessions with the morning session focusing on sailing officers and active seafarers, and the afternoon session being attended by leading STCW experts from MARINA, CHED, and PAMTCI. The workshop focused on the comprehensive review of the STCW based on the 22 key areas identified for consideration. The participants actively engaged in the discussions and brainstormed on what changes are required to the STCW Convention and Code related to any ambiguities existing in the current convention and code. This included competencies currently mentioned in the STCW but are now obsolete, and should be deleted, competencies currently required but not amended in the STCW code, and the future competence requirements over the next 15 years. Overall, it was a successful event filled with insightful discussions to continuously improve and contribute to the dynamic standards of maritime education and training. |
