PTC at the Danish–Philippine SBSR Forum: Advancing maritime competitiveness and sustainable growth
NOVEMBER 14 2025
PTC participated in the high-level forum on Revitalizing the Philippine Shipbuilding and Ship Repair (SBSR) Industry, organized by the Royal Danish Embassy in Manila in partnership with MARINA, ARTA, and the Department of Transportation. The event brought together leaders from government, the diplomatic community, and the maritime sector to discuss emerging opportunities and pathways for a more competitive, future-ready SBSR industry.
Hosted by the Danish Embassy, the forum underscored the shared commitment of Denmark and the Philippines to strengthen maritime cooperation and accelerate sector modernization. MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan emphasized the country’s evolving role “not just as a nation of seafarers, but as a nation of shipbuilders,” while Danish Ambassador Franz-Michael Mellbin highlighted Denmark’s readiness to support policy improvement, innovation, and capability-building. ARTA Secretary Ernesto Perez likewise stressed the strategic importance of the SBSR Bill in modernizing the sector and attracting long-term investments.
Representing the private sector, Mr. Gerardo A. Borromeo, CEO of the PTC Group, offered insights on how global sustainability regulations—particularly those governing ethical ship recycling—present new opportunities for the Philippines. He emphasized the alignment of ship repair, retrofitting, and responsible recycling with the country’s broader maritime development goals, positioning these as key components of a modern, integrated maritime economy.
By convening government and industry perspectives, the forum highlighted a strong, multisector commitment to revitalizing the SBSR industry through policy reform, international collaboration, and investments in sustainability. PTC reaffirmed its support for these efforts, recognizing the sector’s critical role in strengthening the Philippines’ standing as a competitive and forward-looking maritime nation.
