FEBRUARY 14, 2025

On February 7, 2025, PTC CEO Gerardo A. Borromeo graced the "Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers 101 Webinar Series" as a guest speaker, delivering the opening remarks for this insightful session that addressed critical issues within the maritime industry. The episode focused on the challenges faced by seafarers, with a specific emphasis on the issue of ambulance-chasing practices, and discussed the necessary measures to combat this growing concern.
Congressman Ron Salo of the Kabayan Partylist, the principal author of the Magna Carta of Seafarers, served as the resource speaker for the session. His input helped illuminate the key provisions of the Magna Carta, which aims to safeguard Filipino seafarers' rights and welfare. Administrator Arnell Ignacio of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) provided the closing remarks, reiterating the importance of supporting Filipino seafarers and upholding the integrity of their profession.
During his address, Mr. Borromeo emphasized the significance of the Magna Carta in advancing the protection of Filipino maritime professionals (GMPs) and all stakeholders in the global industry. He stated, "The Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers is a major step forward in protecting GMPs as well as all stakeholders of this global industry. It ensures fair treatment, penalizes improper behavior, while setting clear guidelines and a framework for all parties to observe. But laws alone are not enough. With the enactment of the Magna Carta, the most important next step is to ensure that GMPs and their families are fully educated on their rights and on their obligations – both elements are key to a successful career at sea."
Mr. Borromeo’s remarks resonated deeply with the webinar participants, underscoring the importance of continuous education and awareness to ensure that seafarers and their families fully understand their rights and responsibilities. This, he emphasized, is essential in helping GMPs thrive in their careers while maintaining the integrity of the maritime industry.
