PHILCAMSAT instructors shine at CIL-CLIMA Conference on Decarbonization and Alternative Fuels

FEBRUARY 21, 2025

PHILCAMSAT proudly took the global stage as instructors Mary Grace Velasco and Michaela Agtarap presented at the prestigious CIL-CLIMA Conference on the Decarbonization of Shipping and Alternative Fuels, held from February 12-13, 2025, in Singapore. Hosted by the National University of Singapore’s Centre for International Law (NUS-CIL) and the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Climate Change Law and Governance (UCPH-CLIMA), the event brought together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to address the pressing challenges of maritime decarbonization. Their research, “Assessing the Capability of Philippine Shipyards in Alternative Fuel Engine Retrofitting: A Guide to Policy Formulation,” was featured during Session 8: Domestic Approaches, underscoring the critical role of shipyard modernization in the country’s transition toward sustainable shipping practices.

Their presentation highlighted key barriers to retrofitting, including infrastructure limitations, regulatory challenges, and workforce readiness, while also providing a roadmap for policy development. They emphasized the importance of upgrading shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) facilities, aligning with the Philippine Maritime Industry Development Plan’s goals of increasing ship retrofitting and modernization rates. The research also outlined the need for stakeholder collaboration, regulatory support, and workforce development to enhance the Philippines’ competitiveness in the global green shipping transition.

As maritime decarbonization accelerates, PHILCAMSAT remains committed to equipping maritime professionals with the knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future. The insights gained from the conference will help shape new training programs focused on alternative fuel technologies, environmental compliance, and energy-efficient retrofitting. Through continued participation in global forums, PHILCAMSAT reaffirms its role as a key player in advancing the Philippines’ maritime capabilities while supporting international sustainability efforts.
