PTC-CSJ Foundation scholars make an impact through outreach and maritime competitions

SEPTEMBER 30, 2024

On October 5, PTC-CSJ Foundation’s BS Marine Transportation scholars at Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (MMCL), Jiro Andres and Michelle Belling, led a group of MMCL students in an outreach program in Porac, Pampanga, aimed at connecting with the indigenous Aeta community.

Themed “SAMAKATUTUBO: Hearts and Minds for the Aetas,” the initiative focused on contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of No Poverty, Zero Hunger, and Reduced Inequalities.

Organized by MMCL’s Office for Strategic Programs and Engagement (OSPGE), the outreach program not only fostered community connections but also provided students with invaluable insights into social responsibility and cultural awareness.

As scholar Belling stated, “Such initiatives serve as a reminder of the importance of empathy and collaboration in addressing societal challenges. As we reflect on this experience, it is clear that engaging with diverse communities enriches our understanding and commitment to making a positive impact in the world."

On September 24, maritime schools and academies across the Philippines gathered at the AMOSUP Convention Hall in Intramuros, Manila, to commemorate the 29th National Seafarer’s Day. The event also featured the 15th Art Contest and the 18th Oratorical Contest, showcasing the talents of aspiring maritime professionals.

Representing MMCL’s Mapua-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET), Michelle Belling, a PTC-CSJ Foundation scholar, participated in the Oratorical Competition. Notably, Michelle was one of only two women among the five who reached the final top 10, competing alongside several male contestants. For Cadette Belling, the experience was both rewarding and empowering, highlighting the importance of female representation.

Additionally, five PTC-CSJ scholars – Michelle Belling, Roland Benipayo, Michael Angelo Garbin, Paolo Guino, and Nervin Orfano – attended the Maritime Future Leaders Symposium 2024 on September 28 at AMOSUP Convention Hall. The event was organized by the Philippine Association of Maritime Institutions (PAMI), ISWAN Philippines, and the GOLD Foundation in partnership with AMOSUP and ITF Seafarers’ Trust.
