Cultivating talent through educational partnerships

NOVEMBER 22, 2024

Colleges and universities are vital sources of emerging professional talent. By partnering with these institutions, companies not only gain direct access to a diverse pool of candidates but also influence curriculum development. This collaboration ensures that the workforce of the future is equipped with the necessary skills to excel in their respective fields.

The PTC Talent Acquisition Group (TAG) exemplifies the benefits of such partnerships by actively engaging with educational institutions. Through these collaborations, TAG helps sustain the PTC Group's talent pipeline across industries—on land, sea, and in the air.

One shining example of this partnership is Dave Berry Jomillo, a graduate of PHINMA St. Jude College (SJC). With a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) degree, Dave's journey into the professional world was facilitated by TAG's strong relationship with SJC.

Dave began his career as an OJT intern with The PTC Group. During his training, Zaralet Cruzat, Service Delivery Manager, identified his potential and recommended him for a position with First Data Corp., PTC's IT service provider.

Even though Dave was not part of the first batch of interns endorsed by SJC, his coordinator ensured that he was given a chance. Dave recalled: "Initially, I was asked if I wanted to apply to PTC even while I was still an intern. I was not sure at first because I was still enjoying my internship. However, I decided to submit my resume, which was how my journey with First Data Corp. and PTC started." On December 11, 2023, Dave officially began his career with First Data Corp as part of its Help Desk Group, which provides IT services to PTC.

Transitioning from academia to the workplace presented its challenges, but mentorship played a crucial role in Dave's success. "Initially, I experienced culture shock. The experience in school is different from the real working environment. However, my supervisors guided me well and the work ethic at PTC is commendable and I truly enjoyed it. It's a joyful experience because of my colleagues and the people I support and work with at PTC. I am truly grateful since this is my first job," Dave shared.

Dave encourages future interns to embrace every learning opportunity and value the wisdom of their mentors. "Observe what your mentors teach and engrain it in your heart. If you love what you are doing, just keep going.” In Dave's continuing journey, he expressed immense gratitude for the guidance he received and the work he does at PTC. "Thank you for guiding me correctly and for the many experiences I have learned working with the people here at PTC. I am deeply grateful."

Dave's journey highlights the importance of mentorship, workplace culture, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. It also underscores the value of partnerships between companies and educational institutions in developing the next generation of skilled professionals.
