On December 6, 2024, PTC-CSJ-TK Foundation’s scholars from the Mapúa-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training – Jiro Andres, Michelle Belling, Roland Benipayo, and Shawn Tapia – visited the OceanXplorer, a cutting-edge research and media vessel that docked on December 5 and 6 at the Port of Manila, South Harbor.
The OceanXplorer, equipped with advanced technologies, including Triton submersibles that dive up to 1,000 meters and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that reach depths of 6,000 meters, represents a significant advancement in ocean exploration and media production. These capabilities allow scientists to document previously unseen marine ecosystems.
During the tour, the scholars explored various facilities and learned about innovative tools for oceanographic research, such as sonar systems for mapping the seafloor and laboratories for genetic sequencing.
The experience enhanced the scholars’ understanding of marine science and the importance of public engagement in ocean conservation. Inspired by their visit, the scholars are now better equipped to advocate for marine conservation and scientific discovery.
The scholars’ tour was made possible through PTC-CSJ’s partnership with WWF-Philippines, which is part of OceanX Education’s network.
