PTC CEO Gerardo Borromeo highlights the role of GMPs in achieving a greener maritime industry at IMO symposium

OCT 28, 2022

PTC CEO Gerardo Borromeo stressed the crucial role of seafarers in ensuring a cleaner and greener maritime industry at the Second Symposium on Low and Zero Carbon Fuels for Shipping organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) held at the IMO Headquarters in London and streamed live via Youtube.

"The decarbonization and digitalization transition is not solely dependent on the future of ships," said Mr. Borromeo during the symposium. "It will depend on the maritime professionals we develop. We can build a ship in less than 3 years but it takes 12 to 14 years to form a cadet to a master."

The symposium focused on the challenges and opportunities that renewable fuel production represents in the context of shipping decarbonization, particularly for developing countries, and the need for enhanced cooperation at all levels to support this global transition. The symposium was open to all Member Governments, IGOs, NGOs, and the general public.

"While there are significant obstacles to overcome in our decarbonization journey, we must not forget that this transition also comes with significant opportunities, including for developing countries, such as the expansion of renewable energy production or the inclusion of developing countries in route-based action plans," shared IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim.
