Around 45 volunteers composed of Northern Star Employees and Partner Retailers joined faculty members, staff and parents of the Banganan Elementary School in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya for the fourth leg of Northern Star’s “SIKAP, SULONG, TULONG!” (STS) last September 23, 2017.

Working tirelessly on a rainy Saturday, the volunteers refurbished 120 school chairs and desks, fabricated four blackboards and three bookshelves, repainted one classroom and created a mural for Banganan Elementary School’s 271 students and eight teachers. Renovate to Educate (rED), a non-profit organization, organized and supervised the activity.

Apart from the support provided by the company, Northern Star employees themselves pitched in to purchase school supplies and teaching materials for the students and teachers of Banganan. Not to be outdone, Partner Retailers attending the regular Northeast Luzon Zone Meeting held the previous day also donated their share of educational supplies and volunteered to be carpenters and painters for a day.

Since its inception in 2016, STS’ education-focused project “Maayos na Paaralan,Magandang Kinabukasan” has benefited more than 4,300 students in four schools across Northern Luzon and Metro Manila.

Aside from their involvement in STS, Northern Star volunteers also took part in Hands On Manila’s Servathon 2017 where they served as “sherpas” tasked with orienting and supervising volunteer teams as they produced various kits for delivery to families affected by the Marawi strife.

Through these volunteerism projects, Northern Star hopes to provide its employees the opportunity to develop their leadership and social skills, encouraging in them a greater sense of responsibility, compassion and awareness as they work together to help uplift underserved communities.
