A training program developed by the Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training, Inc. (PHILCAMSAT) was cited as Highly Commended during the Safety at Sea (SAS) Awards held last September 13, 2017 at the London International Shipping Week 2017.
The Bosun’s Role & Responsibility Evaluation and Enhancement Program (BOSREEP), nominated for Best Crew Development and Training Programme, was specially designed by PHILCAMSAT to provide knowledge, skills and an understanding of leadership and teamwork at the Support Level. The program underscores competent leadership and effective teamwork as critical elements needed to satisfactorily perform support level duties on board, taking into consideration the individual differences arising from a mix of nationalities.
Also among the night’s nominees was Capt. Rolando A. Sorongon, PTC Bayaning Marino Awardee at the 2017 Seafarer Awards, who was shortlisted for Master of the Year. As Master of Ugland Marine Management’s MV Fermita, Capt. Sorongan led his team in rescuing an Indonesian fishing boat off the coast of Indonesia last April 24, 2017. The heroic efforts of Capt. Sorongan and his team saved the lives of three fishermen.
As part of the London International Shipping Week 2017, the Safety at Sea awards brought together key stakeholders of the global maritime industry – from ship masters and crew to ship owners and ship managers, as well as companies that support safe and efficient ship operations through training and technology.
